FAQ

Q: What do I need to know before I buy a Canadiano?
A: Canadiano is a simple pour-over coffee filter made out of wood. It works  similar to other pour-over filters except you season and develop your Canadiano based on your preferences over time.

To use a Canadiano, you will pour 2 table spoons of coffee, add hot water and stir a few times. 2-4 minutes later your cup of coffee is ready!
After you are done, you empty the grinds and rinse the bowl with warm water.

Q: I’m a devoted pour-over user, how similar is Canadiano going to be to the pour-over I already have?
A: It’s quite different. Canadiano has a metal filter instead of paper, it’s made out of wood instead of ceramic, it’s hand crafted  by a passionate team of craftsmen and it looks very different than any other pour-over you have ever seen!
Well… What it has in common with the standard pour-overs is that they all use gravity to filter hot water through coffee grinds.

Q: How should I select my first Canadiano?
A:
Any of our standard editions, Birch, Walnut, Cherry and White Oak are perfect for starters. Read a bit more about each editions and pair them with your favorite beans and roasts. As an example, Cherry and Birch are best with light and medium roasts while we recommend dark roast beans with Walnut, Oak and Cherry. Later on when you become a Canadiano master, we recommend that you try one of the Raw editions or the special editions which we release every few months. Twitter or Instagram would be the best way to stay in touch with the release of the special editions!

Q: Does the Maple or Birch Canadiano taste different than the Walnut, Cherry and Oak pieces?
A: The difference is more noticeable in the Raw editions, where each material absorbs the coffee flavors differently over time. The Raw editions tend to require more maintenance, so we recommend that customers take this into consideration when purchasing their Canadiano.

Q: I just got my Canadiano, what should I know?
A:
All pieces are freshly oiled and finished before shipment, make sure you read the instructions in the box and follow the steps! Your Canadiano is still adapting to its environment and will have a nutty, woody flavor which will be replaced with your coffee roast preferences in the next 2-3 weeks. Repeat the 6 step seasoning instructions every now and then during the first few weeks & stir regularly as you brew!

Q: I lost my instructions sheet, where can I find it?
A: The standard edition’s instructions are available here: http://canadiano.co/instructions/
You can find the instructions for the Raw Editions here: http://canadiano.co/instructions-raw/

Q:How long does it take to brew a cup of Canadiano?
A: Brewing time should range from 2-4 minutes, but may be shorter depending on how much coffee you add and your stirring technique during the brewing process. Be experimental, come up with your own brewing process!

See this page for more details on our recommended method of using a Canadiano.

Q:Can I put the Canadiano in the dishwasher?
A:
No.

Q: Can I put the filter in the dishwasher?
A:
You don’t need to take the filter out unless you really really want to wash it. We don’t suggest taking the filter out but if you need to, you can push it out from the bottom holes with a thin and long enough pin or wire. If you do take it out, then yes! Totally… The filter is made with high-grade stainless steel and will be perfectly okay in a dishwasher.

Q: What’s involved with being a Raw user?
A:
The Raw collection is designed for single-origin coffee drinkers. Ideally, your Raw Canadiano should be used with only one type of coffee. The Raw pieces will absorb the specific characteristics and flavors of your coffee and deliver an evolving coffee experience over time.
The Raw editions require a bit more maintenance after each use, and you will need to make sure that you apply the Canadiano Conditioning Oil regularly. This really depends on how frequently you use your Canadiano. Like fine leather, wood requires special care to stay in good condition. The Conditioning Oil is a self drying natural oil that keeps your Canadiano in a stable condition. The editions will develop cracks if not maintained and cared for properly.

Q: how do I use my Canadiano?

  1. Put your Canadiano on top of a coffee cup.
  2. Use 2 table spoons of Canadiano Organic Roast.
If you prefer using your own coffee beans we suggest using grinds prepared for metal filter, coarse ground or #9 in a 1-10 scale.
If you like stronger coffee, grind finer. (we do offer specialty filters for fine grinds, you can order them online if interested.)
  3. Pour the ground coffee into the bowl to cover the metal filter.
  4. Boil a cup of water, pour the water slowly and evenly on the coffee.
  5. Wait for about 1 minute for the coffee to brew and stir a couple of times during this time.
  6. Stir your coffee a few more times during the process and pour more hot water water if needed.
  7. The whole process should take between 2-4 minutes.
  8. Your cup of Canadiano is ready!
  9. Compost the grinds shortly after you are done, and rinse your Canadiano with warm water.

Q: So… how do I clean my Canadiano after I make my cup of coffee?
A:
You can compost the used coffee grinds and rinse your Canadiano with warm water. You don’t really need to use dish-soap to clean your Canadiano, a simple rinse with warm water will make sure the bowl is clean. Use dish-soap if you think it is necessary. Over time, your Canadiano will maintain itself as the natural oils from your preferred coffee beans build up after each use.

Q: What should I do if it’s taking longer than 4 minutes to filter through?
A:
Stir more often and adjust your grind settings.
You can always try the Canadiano Organic Roast coffee that is prepared especially for use with a Canadiano. You can order here at this link!
If you chose to use your own coffee beans we suggest grinding your coffee coarser or stir more during the brewing period. We suggest starting with coarse setting, something similar to french press and grinding finer one step at a time until you reach the optimum setting based on your preferences.

Q: What should I do if the coffee is not brewed enough or water goes through the filter quicker than usual?
A: Have you tried the Canadiano Organic Roast beans? You can order some on this link.
Or you can grind your coffee finer, compact the coffee before pouring hot water. Don’t pour hot water straight in the middle, distribute it evenly and start from the sides.
Stir regularly.

Q: How often should I re-finish & maintain my Canadiano?
A: The maintenance of your Canadiano depends on your frequency of use and how you store it. For a regular user (about 10 cups a week) we suggest refinishing the Canadiano every 3-4 months with our maintenance kit available online.

Q: Is Canadiano FDA approved?
A: Yes! All parts, finishes and materials used in Canadiano comply with Food and Drugs Act (FDA) and regulations. We use 100% natural materials in the production and finishing of the Canadiano pieces.

Q: Anything people with allergies should know?
A: We do not recommend Canadiano for individuals with nut allergies or any other specific allergies as the wood is finished with  natural pure oils that contains edible nut oils.

Q: Am I going to save the world if I start using Canadiano?
A: Yes, absolutely!  We are proud to be a local manufacturer. We only use certified wood by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). All our production is done in Canada with the highest standards of environmental regulations under Food and Drugs Act (FDA).
The Canadiano is designed with reusable filters to reduce the waste of paper filters. All parts of the Canadiano are natural, biodegradable and recyclable. The packaging is designed and made with recycled cardboard.

Q: How long does it take to process my order?
A:
It takes us about a week to process each order. As soon as you place your order you should receive an email from PayPal confirming your order. No further action is required, email us if you have any specific questions.

Q: How does the shipping work?
A: We ship all the pieces through Canada Post.  Here is a link with more details on the expected delivery times for different services.
Please note Canada Post only insures parcels shipped with a trackable service.
We do not have access to tracking information or the state of delivery on some of the standard services. For international orders, orders outside of Canada and the United States, we strongly recommend choosing a shipping service with tracking information.
